If you love dollhouses and miniatures, I definitely recommend 

visiting the exhibition “XXSmall: Dollhouses and More in Miniature” 

at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague

It’s open until March 25, 2012

I enjoyed all the dollhouses and miniatures 

from both the Netherlands and abroad

If you watch my video, you’ll get a sense of the exhibition

Photography was allowed, as long as you didn’t use a 

flash or tripod and I took full advantage of that

Ik heb genoten van alle poppenhuizen en 

 

miniaturen uit binnen- en buitenland

Als je mijn filmpje bekijkt krijg je een 

 

indruk van deze tentoonstelling

Er mocht namelijk worden gefotografeerd zonder flitser 

 

of statief en dat heb ik dan ook volop gedaan

Dollhouses were a serious matter in the 17th and 18th centuries

The wealthy sometimes spent as much money 

on this expensive hobby as on their own homes

At XXSmall, the history of interior design can be seen 

in elaborate dollhouses from the 17th century up

to contemporary miniature homes 

fully furnished in modern design

Welgestelden spenderen soms evenveel geld aan 

 

deze kostbare hobby als aan hun eigen woning

In XXSmall is de geschiedenis van de wooninrichting 

 

te zien in pronkpoppenhuizen uit de 17de eeuw tot en met 

 

eigentijdse miniatuurhuizen geheel ingericht in modern design

The fascination with the miniature world spans all ages

Even in ancient China and Greece, 

miniature objects were created

Nothing sparks wonder like a perfectly crafted little

set of gold dishes that fits inside a cherry pit

And nothing captures the imagination like an old dollhouse, 

fully furnished, bringing life to 

how people lived in earlier times

De fascinatie voor de wereld in het klein is van alle tijden

Al in de Chinese en Griekse oudheid werden 

 

er voorwerpen in miniatuur gemaakt

Niets wekt zo de verwondering op als een tot in perfectie

 

nagemaakt serviesje in goud dat in een kersenpit past

En niets spreekt zo tot de verbeelding als een oud poppenhuis

 

dat volledig is ingericht waardoor het wonen 

 

in vroeger tijden geheel tot leven komt

The exhibition doesn’t focus solely 

on Dutch domestic culture

For example, there’s also a German, an English,

and an Italian dollhouse on display, as well

 as a Japanese kitchen and a Chinese temple

In de tentoonstelling is niet alleen oog 

 

voor de Nederlandse wooncultuur

Ook zijn er bijvoorbeeld een Duits, een Engels en een

 

Italiaans poppenhuis te zien en een Japanse keuken

 

en een Chinese tempel

What’s interesting about the typical 18th-century

British house is that it’s an exact copy of a 

building that still exists today—namely, 

27 King Street in King’s Lynn

Het interessante aan het typische 18-de eeuwse 

 

Britse huis is dat het een exacte kopie is van 

 

een - nog steeds - bestaand gebouw, 

 

namelijk King Street 27 in King’s Lynn

The small city palace Palazzina Giocattolo from Bologna

is a feast for the eyes, with its flamboyant ceiling 

and the elegant furniture of typical Italian allure

Another highlight is the fully furnished farm that Princess Juliana

received from her parents for her second birthday

This allowed her to learn about farm life through play

Een ander hoogtepunt is de compleet aangeklede boerderij 

 

die prinses Juliana kreeg van haar ouders

 

voor haar tweede verjaardag

Hiermee kon zij al spelend kennis maken met het boerenleven
