Petronella Dunois Dollhouse at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam / Poppenhuis Petronella Dunois in het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
The oldest dollhouse in the Rijksmuseum dates from 1676
It was assembled as a hobby by the wealthy
young woman Petronella Dunois
She bequeathed the dollhouse to her daughter,
and it was passed down through the female line for centuries
In 1934, Petronella’s dollhouse was donated to the Rijksmuseum
In the 17th century, wealthy merchants in the
Netherlands often assembled collections
They kept their valuables in so-called
“kunstkasten” (art cabinets)
The wives of these affluent men also built collections,
but in their own domain: the household
Large cabinets were furnished as miniature houses,
complete with furniture and little figures
These dollhouses were real attractions
When important guests visited, the gentleman would
open the drawers of his art cabinet and
give explanations about the contents
His wife would show her guests the dollhouse
and provide an extensive demonstration of the house’s features
She could display the contents of cupboards,
reveal hidden compartments, turn on lights,
and even make the garden fountain spray real water
A dollhouse demonstration could last for hours
The 17th-century contents of the dollhouse remain largely intact,
according to an inventory list from 1730/40
Over time, small additions were made,
so the house is now fuller than in Petronella Dunois’ time
Petronella Dunois assembled her
dollhouse before she married in 1677
On the pincushion in the nursery
are her initials and the year 1676
This house contains many miniature silver items,
specialty of Amsterdam silversmiths
Description of the dollhouse:
The cabinet of the dollhouse is veneered
on the outside with marquetry
Even when closed, the contents of the cabinet
can be admired through windows in the doors
This type of cabinet on legs was popular in
the second half of the 17th century
The dollhouse cabinet is veneered with
walnut over an oak core
The turned legs are connected by a double Y-shaped
stretcher with an oval intersection
The sides feature eight-pointed stars within circles
Behind the doors, which have cut-out openings,
the rooms are arranged as follows (from left to right):
Bottom: cellar, kitchen, dining room
Middle: nursery and best room
Top: turf loft, attic, children’s room
The house is filled with a collection of miniature objects and 21 dolls
Dimensions: Height: 200 cm, Width: 150.5 cm, Depth: 56 cm.

Antique dollhouse by Maria de Vogel van Aalst, 1790–1800, from a private collection / Antiek poppenhuis van Maria de Vogel van Aalst 1790-1800 uit een particuliere collectie
A beautiful 18th-century dollhouse in a display cabinet
The cabinet itself was also beautifully painted
with flowers and Chinese motifs
The dollhouse is said to have been furnished by Maria de Vogel van Aalst
(1789–1866).
There is linen with embroidered monograms,
confirming the family’s provenance
There is linen with embroidered monograms,
confirming the family’s provenance
Five rooms were created within the display cabinet:
Cellar
Here stands a wooden push sled and earthenware pots
Kitchen
The walls are covered with kitchen utensils, and
many miniatures are also placed on the floor
Two ladies are present in the kitchen by the fireplace
In the wall cabinet, an English dinner service is on display
Parlor
Walls with wainscoting
Fireplace with a marble mantel
A corner buffet and many miniature silver items
Nursery
Beautifully decorated walls
A large canopy bed with silk curtains and
wo cradles woven from willow rods
Attic
Marked linens hang in the attic to dry on clothes poles
There is also an ironing board, mangle, linen press, and laundry baskets
A blackboard is used to record all the laundry sent to the laundrette
Most of the miniature silver items in the dollhouse
date from the early 18th century
A few objects and dolls were added in the 19th century,
but the late 18th-century atmosphere has been preserved
The proportions aren’t all accurate, but I found
this to be a beautiful dollhouse to look at
Unfortunately, most of the photos didn’t turn
out well because it was difficult to photograph through the glass

II have transformed the new linen cupboard in my dollhouse / Ik heb de nieuwe linnenkast van mijn poppenhuis veranderd
I bought the linen cupboard in a dollhouse shop,
but it wasn’t quite to my liking
I “pimped” this cupboard for the sewing room. I painted it,
but you can still see the wood underneath
I glued a small hook to the side of the cupboard
On it hangs the little slip I made
Ik heb een haakje aan de zijkant van de kast gelijmd
Hier hangt het onderjurkje aan dat ik heb gemaakt
I lined the inside of the doors with fabric and added lace to the shelves
The bolts of fabric were made by wrapping a piece
of fabric around a small piece of cardboard
The little bundles of sheets were made from pieces of satin,
tied together with a tiny ribbon
On the bottom shelf, there is a little tin of Christmas balls
with “Christmas 1975” written on the lid
Op de onderste plank staat een blikje met kerstballen met Kerst 1975 op het deksel
That was an important year for me, and I like the idea
of incorporating little details like this into a dollhouse
Dat was voor mij een belangrijk jaar en ik vind het leuk
om dit soort details straks in een poppenhuis te verwerken
