The dollhouses of Agnes Maria Clifford, also known as "Grootje" Backer, 1785–1810 / De poppenhuizen van Agnes Maria Clifford en bekend als "Grootje" Backer 1785-1810
Later in life, Agnes Maria Clifford (1739–1828),
wife of Cornelis Backer and called “Grootje”
since the birth of her grandchildren,
devoted herself to furnishing and decorating two dollhouses
During the XXSmall exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum in
The Hague, they were displayed side by side for the first time again
Unfortunately, it was very dark there, making it
difficult to take good photos through the glass
Her initials AMC, the dates 1805 and 1806,
and her ages 66 and 67 are embroidered
in the floor rugs of both houses
Ownership of older doll accessories may have inspired her,
and in 1789 she inherited the miniature silver
The style of the furnishings and the dressing of the
dolls reflects the period between 1785 and 1810
Both houses are true showpiece dollhouses that teach
a lot about interior design from the late
18th and early 19th centuries
veel leren over de interieurinrichting uit de
laat 18de en vroeg 19de eeuw
The detailed dressing of the English wooden
dolls is especially spectacular
This dollhouse can be seen in the attic of
the Simon van Gijn House in Dordrecht

An "Old Dutch" miniature house by Daan Hensens, built between 1990 and 2011 / Een "oud-Hollands" miniatuurhuis van Daan Hensens gebouwd tussen 1990-2011
Inspired by the famous old cabinet dollhouses,
the teacher and antique restorer Daan Hensens created this
large miniature house between 1990 and 2011
By choosing a 1:4 scale, he was able to work with the materials
used in the original examples and employ the traditional construction techniques
The house measures 2.30 m high, 2.45 m wide, and 90 cm deep.
In a nutshell, it illustrates daily life indoors in earlier times
The top layer of the house contains “Dutch” rooms
from the 17th and 18th centuries
The middle layer features a Staphorst and a Hindeloopen room,
with a Zaanse hall and a chamber pot in between
The bottom layer houses kitchens and a maid’s room with a box bed

The plans for my dollhouse are still changing / De plannen voor mijn poppenhuis veranderen nog steeds
I thought I had carefully planned everything for the construction
of my dollhouse, but I’m still changing my mind
Maybe you’re always adjusting things, and it’s never truly perfect?
Does that sound familiar?
It all started when I was designing the display cabinet
Time and again, I made new drawings of the layout
After giving the measurements to the carpenter,
I still adjusted them once more and even wanted to add an extra floor
Now that I’m working on installing floors and wallpaper
in the dollhouse, I’ve already changed the layout several times
I swapped the kitchen and the parlor between floors
The kitchen is now next to the dining room, and the parlor
is next to the hall, as that seemed more logical for the layout
At first, I planned to make two rooms in the attic,
but once I started, I decided to have just one large space
Now I’ve decided that there will be two rooms in the attic after all:
One room for the maid and a space for drying the laundry
The maid will get the items from the sewing room for her room
I now want to turn the sewing room into a nursery,
as I felt that having only one children’s room was ultimately too few
Because of all these changing ideas, I’ve paused making floors
and wallpapering until I’m sure what I want—or will that moment ever come?

The large statue stood in Tutankhamun’s tomb / Het grote beeld stond in het graf van Toetanchamon
This figurine, at 1:12 scale for the dollhouse,
is a keepsake from a wonderful journey we
once took through Egypt with our children
The original statue once stood in Tutankhamun’s tomb
and can now be admired at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo
Every time I look at this tiny replica, I’m reminded of
the awe and wonder we felt exploring
the ancient treasures of Egypt together

Spanish porcelain holy water font, scale 1:12, for my dollhouse / Spaans porseleinen wijwaterbakje schaal 1:12 voor mijn poppenhuis
A friend bought this adorable “antique” holy water font,
scale 1:12, for my dollhouse during her vacation in Spain
I was very surprised by this special miniature and
that she had bought it especially for me
The holy water font will hang next
to the bed in the dollhouse bedroom
