I’ve made a bellows vacuum cleaner for my dollhouse

Ik heb voor mijn poppenhuis een blaasbalgstofzuiger gemaakt

This miniature bellows vacuum cleaner is a 

replica of the 1904 “Baby Daisy”

and I made it using a construction plan by Bert Aarts

Deze miniatuur blaasbalgstofzuiger is een replica van de Baby Daisy 

 

uit 1904 en heb ik gemaakt aan de hand van een

 

bouwtekening van Bert Aarts

The Baby Daisy was a manually operated vacuum cleaner

It was designed in France but built in Great Britain,

and it required two people to operate it

De Baby Daisy was een stofzuiger die met de hand werd bediend

Hij is ontworpen in Frankrijk maar gebouwd in Groot-Brittannië

 

en het vergde twee mensen om hem te kunnen bedienen

The first person stood on the base of the vacuum cleaner 

and moved the bellows back and forth using the 

broomstick in the holder at the front

The second person could then use the hose to vacuum the house

The dust was collected in a cotton bag inside the machine

De eerste persoon stond op de basis van de stofzuiger en bewoog

 

de blaasbalg heen en weer met behulp van de bezemsteel in

 

de houder op de voorzijde

De tweede persoon kon de slang vervolgens gebruiken om 

 

het huis schoon te zuigen

Het stof werd verzameld in een katoenen zak in de machine

The dollhouse has a new seamstress / Het poppenhuis heeft een nieuwe naaister

The maids never had enough time to mend clothes or

sew new garments for the dollhouse residents,

so seamstress Clara has now joined the household

With her sewing machine, rolls of fabric, 

and tiny scissors at the ready,

she’s already busy bringing new life to 

the wardrobes of the miniature inhabitants

De dienstmeisjes hadden tijd tekort om verstelklusjes te doen

 

of nieuwe kleding te naaien voor de bewoners van 

 

het poppenhuis en daarom is naaister Clara nu in dienst genomen

The Sandman in miniature / Klaas Vaak in miniatuur

I came across this charming scene featuring the Sandman, 

made by Akke Ris,

at the dollhouse fair in De Vuister in Koog aan de Zaan

Inside the little book is the bedtime rhyme:

clothes off
pyjamas on
it’s high time
to go to bed

just take a look
at the clock
all the little chickens
are already on their perch

come now, it’s time
to go to sleep

Deze leuke scene met Klaas Vaak, gemaakt door Akke Ris, 

 

kwam ik tegen op de poppenhuisbeurs, in de Vuister 

 

in Koog aan de Zaan, met in het boekje het versje: 

kleertjes uit

pyjamaatje aan

hoogste tijd om

naar bed te gaan

kijk eens even

op de klok

alle kippetjes

zijn al op stok

kom we moeten

nu slapen gaan

The nursery of the dollhouse is finished / De kinderkamer van het poppenhuis is klaar

I decorated the nursery in the dollhouse for a little girl

De kinderkamer in het poppenhuis heb ik ingericht voor een meisje

The walls are covered with pink Victorian wallpaper, 

because my daughter also had everything pink in her bedroom when she was little

De wanden zijn voorzien van roze Victoriaans behang omdat

 

mijn dochter vroeger ook alles roze had in haar slaapkamer

You can also see a ballerina, ballet shoes, leg warmers, 

and a ballet cardigan, because I love ballet

and my daughter used to take ballet lessons too

Verder zie je hier een ballerina, balletschoenen, beenwarmers

 

en een balletvestje omdat ik dol ben op ballet en

 

mijn dochter vroeger ook op ballet heeft gezeten

I enjoy adding many of these kinds of details

from my own life into my dollhouse

Ik vind het leuk om veel van dit soort details uit

 

mijn eigen leven te verwerken in mijn poppenhuis

My daughter also has beautiful chestnut-red curls, 

which is why I chose this doll

Mijn dochter heeft ook prachtige kastanje rode krullen dus

 

vandaar dit popje

These little chairs and the table are by Petite Princess, in 1:16 scale

 
They’re now over 50 years old, but I’ve kept them carefully all these years

and now they finally have a perfect spot in the nursery of my dollhouse

Deze stoeltjes en het tafeltje zijn van Petite Princess in schaal 1:16

Ze zijn inmiddels ruim 50 jaar oud maar gelukkig heb ik ze altijd 

 

goed bewaard zodat ze nu gebruikt kunnen worden in

 

de kinderkamer van mijn poppenhuis

I have my old reading board both in a large and a small version

The original size I used as a child, and a miniature version for the dollhouse

It’s such a lovely detail that immediately brings back memories 

of my early school years

 

Mijn leesplankje van vroeger heb ik zowel in het groot als in het klein

Het originele formaat dat ik als kind gebruikte, en een miniatuurversie

voor in het poppenhuis

Het is zo’n leuk detail dat meteen herinneringen oproept

aan de eerste schooljaren

We used to have a very sweet black and white cat,

so of course she couldn’t be left out of my dollhouse

We hadden vroeger een hele lieve zwart met witte poes

 

dus die mocht natuurlijk ook niet ontbreken in mijn poppenhuis

I made this bed from cardboard, foam, fabric, and lace

Dit bed heb ik gemaakt van karton, schuimrubber, stof en kant

This little rug has the same pattern as the wallpaper 

and I made it using transfer paper

gemaakt met behulp van transferpapier
