This stately home was made for Lady Clara van Sminia (1857–1887).
Clara lived with her father (her mother passed away
in the year she was born, 1857) on the
De Klinze estate in Oudkerk, Friesland, The Netherlands
The dollhouse was intended as a toy, not as a showpiece.
All the rooms were accessible to children, as sections
of the front and side façades could be removed
The fully furnished interior, with trinkets, thick carpets,
and hunting trophies, is richly detailed and provides an accurate
depiction of life in a mid-19th-century noble country house
All the rooms are fully decorated with wallpaper, carpets,
and curtains, and there is even a piano that really plays
In the dining room, the gilded chandelier and the art cabinet stand out
The furnishings largely consist of factory-made miniature furniture
and items that were readily available at the time
The stately residence can be seen in its various rooms
It is furnished with a large kitchen, dining room,
several salons, luxurious bedrooms, and even a convenience room,
the predecessor of the modern toilet
You really get a sense of life among the Frisian nobility in the 19th century
The dollhouse is part of the collection of the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden
