Lady Lita de Ranitz (1876–1960) collected dolls and dollhouses throughout her life

The collection of this noblewoman from The Hague is now owned by the museum

Freule Lita de Ranitz (1876-1960) verzamelde haar 

hele leven poppen en poppenhuizen

De verzameling van deze adellijke Haagse dame is 

tegenwoordig in het bezit van het museum

The collection consists of twenty dollhouses and doll rooms,
including the large dollhouse from 1910

Lita created authentic Biedermeier-style living rooms, as well as a
Hindeloopen room and a large kitchen, and she also owned several miniature shops

In 1910, Lita de Ranitz had a large dollhouse built to give her

miniature collection a home of its own

Both the interior and exterior were designed to resemble a modern villa of that time

Lita richtte stijlzuivere Biedermeier woonkamers in, evenals een

haar collectie miniaturen een eigen huis te geven

Her famous dollhouse offers a wonderful impression of 

interior design from the early twentieth century

The richly furnished rooms evoke a distinctly nineteenth-century atmosphere

However, the dollhouse also includes modern features such as electric lighting,
central heating, a telephone, a vacuum cleaner, and taps with running water

The construction and furnishing of the dollhouse are well documented

Together with her close friend, Lady Marie Auguste van Hogendorp,
she traveled across Europe, purchasing new 

furniture and other miniatures along the way

Haar beroemde poppenhuis geeft een prachtig beeld van de 

inrichting aan het begin van de vorige eeuw

De volle interieurs ademen een negentiende-eeuwse sfeer

Er zijn echter ook moderne snufjes in het poppenhuis 

 

Elektrische verlichting, centrale verwarming, een telefoon, een stofzuiger 

en kranen voor stromend water

De bouw en inrichting zijn goed gedocumenteerd

Samen met haar hartsvriendin freule Marie Auguste van Hogendorp 

reisde zij door Europa, onderweg nieuwe meubeltjes 

en andere miniaturen kopend

Her sister Anna embroidered curtains and small rugs for the dollhouse

The largest dollhouse in Lita’s collection contains 

several items that recall the Royal House

For example, there is an ivory chess set on a matching table,

a gift from Queen Mother Emma.

She came to view the dollhouse in February 1911 and, 

on that occasion, signed the dollhouse’s guestbook

Zij kwam het poppenhuis in februari 1911 bezichtigen en zette bij 

die gelegenheid haar handtekening in het gastenboek van het poppenhuis

A special feature of the large dollhouse is its collection of miniature paintings
created by renowned artists such as 

Toorop, Gabriël, Mauve, Jongkind, and Arntzenius

Through her artistically inclined father and later through her husband, 

Willem Bastiaan Tholen, Lita became acquainted with many artists

Bijzonder is dat in het grote poppenhuis een collectie miniatuurschilderijen 

hangt die zijn vervaardigd door bekende kunstenaars zoals 

Toorop, Gabriël, Mauve, Jongkind en Arntzenius

Via Lita’s kunstzinnige vader en via haar latere echtgenoot 

Willem Bastiaan Tholen leerde zij veel kunstenaars kennen

They created miniature-sized paintings especially for the dollhouse

In addition to dollhouses, Lita also collected dolls
