Young and old alike can enjoy a room full of dollhouse rooms

at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem (the Netherlands)

Based on existing 17th- and 18th-century dollhouses,

a fabulous collage has been created featuring 71 rooms,

some of which are presented in 3D

It offers visitors the chance to discover up-close details that often remain hidden

The source of inspiration is the monumental dollhouse of

the Amsterdam merchant’s wife Sara Rothé,

one of the showpieces of the Frans Hals Museum

The Simon van Gijn House in Dordrecht is a beautiful

old residence that has been turned into a museum since 1925

In the attic, you’ll find antique toys, miniature rooms, and a few dollhouses

Among them is the famous dollhouse of

Agnes Maria Clifford, who lived from 1739 to 1810

Since the birth of her grandchildren, she was 

affectionately called “Grandma” Backer

In her later years, Agnes, the wife of Cornelis Backer, 

devoted herself to furnishing and decorating two dollhouses

zich toegelegd op het inrichten en aankleden van twee poppenhuizen

Her initials A.M.C., the dates 1805 and 1806, and her ages 66 and 67 

are embroidered into the floor carpets of both houses

Haar initialen AMC, de data 1805 en 1806 en haar leeftijd 66 en 67 jaar

 

zijn in vloertapijten in beide huizen geborduurd

Owning older dolls’ furnishings may have inspired her, 

and in 1789 she inherited the miniature silver

The style of the furnishings and the dolls’ clothing

reflects the period between 1785 and 1810

In particular, the detailed dressing of the English wooden dolls is spectacular

rich source of information about upbringing and toys in the 19th century

The boys loved the drawings made by their father

They served as a reward for diligent work and study

If they hadn’t studied on a given day, no drawing would appear in the diary

De acht getekende dagboekjes van Jacob de Vos vormen

 

een rijke bron over opvoeden en speelgoed in de 19de eeuw

De jongens waren dol op de tekeningen van hun vader

It is a large and unique dollhouse, made by 

Fokke Renooij (1863–1926) for his 

youngest daughter, Maria

Het is een groot en uniek poppenhuis dat is gemaakt door

 

Fokke Renooij (1863-1926) voor zijn jongste dochter Maria

Fokke worked as a conductor on the horse-drawn tram

in Amsterdam, and during his journeys through the city,

he admired the new architecture, 

which inspired him to build the dollhouse

Fokke werkte als conducteur op de paardentram 

 

in Amsterdam en tijdens zijn tochten door de stad 

 

bewonderde hij de nieuwe architectuur die hem 

 

inspireerde tot de bouw van het poppenhuis

The construction of the dollhouse took place from 1904 to 1910

and was made in the style of around 1900

De bouw van het poppenhuis duurde van 1904-1910 

 

en is gemaakt in de stijl van rond 1900

There is so much to see in the dollhouse, including turrets,

chocolate dispensers, a clock tower, dormer windows, 

balconies with French doors, decorated chimneys, 

secret drawers, lots of mirror glass, 

statues, and decorative facades

praline automaatjes, klokkentoren, dakkapellen, 

 

balkons met openslaande deuren, versierde schoorstenen, 

 

geheime laatjes, veel spiegelglas, beelden en gevelversieringen

The dollhouse also has a little shop, with 

Maria’s name on the shop windows

The furnishings and details provide a good impression 

of living and life at the beginning of the twentieth century

De inrichting en de details geven een goed beeld

 

 van het wonen en leven in het begin van de twintigste eeuw

The dollhouse was played with a lot by Maria, 

and later by her children

Er werd veel met het poppenhuis gespeeld door Maria

 

en later door haar kinderen

The dollhouse remained with Maria’s mother, Gerritje Broertjes

Het poppenhuis bleef bij Maria`s moeder Gerritje Broertjes

After her death, her caretaker, district nurse Bussen,

took possession of the dollhouse

Na haar overlijden kreeg haar verzorgster, 

 

wijkzuster Bussen, het poppenhuis in bezit

Ms. Bussen donated it to the Westfries Museum in 1958

The Westfries Museum donated the dollhouse

to the Toy Museum “De Kijkdoos”

There, the dollhouse was given a lovely spot

on the ground floor of the toy museum
